Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that has been used since the 1930’s to treat varicose and spider veins. As the standard of care, it is considered one of the most effective treatments for removing unwanted leg veins.

The procedure involves injecting a solution directly into a vein, causing the treated vein to seal shut and fade from view over time. The treated blood vessel (vein) is then naturally resorbed by the body.

Asclera® is a solution used for sclerotherapy to treat two types of veins in the legs (veins less than 3 mm in diameter) and has anesthetic properties that may help to reduce procedure discomfort.

Marketed as Aethoxysklerol in Europe for more than 50 years, Asclera® was FDA-approved in the US in 2010.

Commonly asked questions about sclerotherapy

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure to treat uncomplicated spider veins and uncomplicated reticular veins. The treatment involves the injection of a solution into affected veins.

What are spider veins?

Spider Veins

Spider Veins

Spider veins are very small, fine, red or blue veins that are less than 1 mm in diameter. They lie closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins and may resemble a thin red line, tree branches, or spider patterns. Spider veins can be found on the legs and may cover a small or large area.

What are small varicose veins aka reticular veins?

Reticular Veins

Reticular Veins

Small varicose veins, also known as reticular veins, are small blood vessels that measure between 1 to 3 mm in diameter and are also known as feeder veins. Small varicose veins can enlarge as a result of increased pressure in the vein or from weakened vein valves. You may have only small varicose veins or both small varicose and spider veins at the same time.

What if I have large varicose veins?

If you have large varicose veins cosmetic sclerotherapy will not be successful. Please contact your doctor to discuss medical treatment options and possible referral to a vascular or vein specialist.

How long does the treatment take?

  • The provider will evaluate you during the first session to make sure that it is safe to perform sclerotherapy and discuss risk treatment options.

  • You will be be booked for a minimum of two 45 min treatment session approximately 4 weeks apart. The actual injection treatment time will be less than 30 min each session.

  • Additional treatment sessions may be required depending on number of veins that require injections, or for repeat injections to ensure optimal results.

Tips for after your procedure

  • Wear compression stockings or support hose continuously for up to 3 days and 2 to 3 weeks after treatment during the daytime

  • Walk 15 to 20 minutes right after the procedure and every day for the next few days

  • Avoid heavy exercise, sunbathing, long plane flights, and hot baths or saunas for 2 to 3 days
